A real comparison of audio quality across streaming services. The answer might surprise you.
Your streaming service is your audio source — and it's one of the most overlooked parts of the audio chain. Spending $500 on headphones and then streaming at 160kbps is like buying a sports car and filling it with the wrong fuel.
Most streaming services compress audio using lossy codecs (Ogg Vorbis, AAC, MP3) at varying bitrates. Higher bitrate = less compression = better quality. Some services now offer lossless streaming — uncompressed audio at CD quality (16-bit/44.1kHz) or even hi-res (24-bit/96kHz+).
Spotify uses Ogg Vorbis compression. At maximum quality (Very High, 320kbps on desktop), it sounds good — transparent to most listeners on most setups. The catch: on mobile, maximum is 160kbps by default. Many users don't realize they're streaming at half the quality.
Always enable Very High quality in Spotify settings. Most people never do.
Apple Music is the best deal in streaming for audio quality. It includes lossless (ALAC, CD quality) and hi-res lossless (up to 24-bit/192kHz) at no extra cost over the standard subscription. On AirPods and Bluetooth headphones, the output is still AAC compressed — you need a wired connection to hear lossless. But on a wired setup, Apple Music at lossless is excellent.
TIDAL HiFi Plus offers FLAC lossless and MQA hi-res at a premium price. MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) is controversial — some argue it's marketing over substance, while others prefer it. The TIDAL library and discovery features are strong. At $19.99/month, it's double the price of Apple Music for arguably similar quality.
Amazon Music HD includes lossless and Ultra HD (up to 24-bit/192kHz) at standard Amazon Music pricing. It's often overlooked but genuinely good. Works especially well on Amazon Echo devices and Fire tablets.
For most people: use Apple Music with lossless enabled on a wired connection, or Spotify at Very High quality on Bluetooth. The difference between 320kbps Spotify and Apple Music lossless is audible on a revealing setup but subtle on average consumer gear. Focus on your headphones and amplification first — source quality is the last 10%.
